Happy New Year! I love the fresh start of the year. It’s exciting to set New Year Resolutions. I like to set intentions about how I want to feel for the next 12 months. It’s often not enough to say “eat healthier” or “workout more” and call it a day. Instead, actionable items are what help us achieve our goals (fellow FitLo Ambassador, Monica Salafia, actually wrote an amazing blog on SMART goals and how to set them). Setting dates in your calendar and joining friends at fitness events is a great way to keep yourself accountable.
To help you start 2018 with a bang, I’ve compiled my picks for free/low cost fitness classes designed to help motivate your New Year Resolutions…
1. “I want to make better food choices.”
New Year, New Nutrition @ Athleta (January 20, 9 am): Athleta (and FitLo) Ambassador, Registered Dietitian and certified personal trainer will speak about nutrition planning and eating healthy. Come learn about her balanced approach, have a chance to win Athleta goodies, and go home with a treat bag. Class is free. Register here.
2. “I want to get more steps.”
Join this free challenge, Journey to Jupiter, to set a goal for how many miles you will walk, run, bike or swim in 2018. You’ll have access to the Moon Joggers online community for that virtual support.
3. “I want to get out of my comfort zone.”
Well, look no further than Denver’s first naked yoga. On January 7 at 8 pm, get bare and get bendy at Release Studio. Tickets are $18 and we promise you’ll have a conversation starter for the rest of the year. Women only. Register here.
4. “I want to be intense.”
Thinking of upping the intensity level on your workouts? It’s always good to have some variety. CrossFit DNR is offering a two-week free trial for new members from January 2 through 16. Class times vary and consist of a 35-minute bootcamp. You can also join their Free Liberty Fundamentals classes.
5. “I want to opt outside.”
It’s always a resolution of mine to get outdoors. The fresh air and Vitamin D are natural mood boosters — plus there are so many ways to stay active in the outdoors. Bicycle Center Littleton is hosting a free ladies’ clinic on winterizing your bike on January 4 at 6 pm, so you have no excuses that it’s January!
6. “I want to run a 5k / marathon / duathlon / trail race.”
Maybe you’ve never run a 5k before. Or maybe you want to break your half marathon personal record. Or maybe this is the year of the mud run. Either way, there are a lot of ways to make this goal a reality. Check out Active.com to find local races and check out sites like PopSugar, Hal Higdon, or apps like Aaptiv to create the perfect training schedule.
Want to get moving right away? Boulder Running Company is and CycleBar DTC are hosting a free duathlon on January 20 at 12 pm. Run from Boulder Running Co. to Cycle Bar for 30 min spin (and then run back after). You’ll get bragging rights, in-store discounts, and treats. Register for the duathlon here
7. “I want to get flexible.”
As always, there are a ton of free yoga events throughout the month. My favorites include: Wander Yoga sponsored by Mellivora Leggings @ Maitri Yoga (January 6, 11 am) and Big Booty Yoga @ Boulder Running Co. (January 6, 10 am).
8. “I have no idea what I want to do.”
That’s fine! Set your goals at GenFit on January 10 at 7 pm with personal trainer Tara LaFerrara and life coach Elani Engelken. The event is MindFIT: mindful awareness for physical results. $20 in person and $10 online.
